Sucks, think I blew my server PSU, or maybe worse...

Post by Red Squirrel »

I bought a 500GB drive to put in my server, realizing I don't need that much space I decided the best thing to do is just replace the 300GB drive with it, so I set it as secondary slave so I can boot up and transfer the data. There is no CD rom drive (well there is one, but IDE cable cant reach) so this would of just been a straight file copy in Linux. At this point there is 4 HDDs in the server, I power it on, it just self powers off. I power it on again, does same thing. I remove the extra drive, still doing it. Only way it runs now is with no hard drives... think I blew the PSU, but I don't want to buy one as it may be something else, and I'll probably pay like 200 bucks here, and if I order then I have to wait a long time....

Man this totally sucks and I don't know what to do. My main server is down, so I can't do shit all. I can barely surf the internet since I have to use my slow ISP dns server. What a way to start a weekend. :/ The saying goes, don't fix it if it aint broke. That 300GB drive should have stayed in, and that 500GB drive should of never went in.

Seems its the PSU... I'm just scared to plug in that new drive again... time to eat before I try that. While I eat I'll debate on if I should even put it in THAT machine, think its a sign....

I assume you mean power supply unit when you're saying PSU. And I assume it's also in an ATX form factor. So that kinda makes me wonder if there was a problem with cooling it or something. I've heard the terms OTP (Overtempature Protection) and OPP (Overpower Protection) used a lot when troubleshooting a PSU, maybe that's what caused the problem?

It was not heat. Probably overload as it could not handle the 4 HDDs.

But now the whole server is fucked. Even with the new power supply, when I go to turn it off, it just turns back on. The motherboard's internal on/off circuitry is basically fried. So next time power goes out, server will turn off then boot back, then UPS will run out of power, entire server corrupted. (Linux does not take hard shut downs very well)

It's old though. AMD 2000+ system. I just don't feel like spending two pay checks to build another one,but I might be forced to. That server powers pretty much everything, I can't afford it to be down.

AoV will grind to a halt if that server cant be fully operational, since thats where everything is stored and its what my test environment is powered by.

Well I doubt for some reason an AMD Athlon 2000+ could handle 4 HDDs. So it's definately an OPP problem, which from what I understand AMD 2000+'s are very well known to do.

This reminds me about that one time my GPU and CPU fan(s) died. Oh god, that was horrible.

Sounds like to me the best thing you can do is rebuild the system, and that sucks :\n

How much watts do you need for your server?

I have 4 ATX power supplys extra. All 300W. I could ship one to you.

Nah if I blew a 500 watt a 300 watt would blow, visibly.

So far it seems to be working with the new 500watt one. It looks of higher quality then the other one which was a no name type. When I build a new PC for myself this curent PC will be the server, and I will retire the 2000+ system. I can probably give it to my sister, she has this super crappy compaq presario. The ones where theres not even room to fit 1 cubic inch of air in the case. Oh man that thing is horribly built. :o:

I'm just glad to be back running again, and that 500GB hard drive is sitting on my desk saying "USE ME!!!" but it aint going in that server,I'm not taking that chance again. I might hook it up to my USB external enclosure and do the data transfer then swap it, but even that, I'm scared that actual drive just takes tons of power on its own maybe.

Really if I had the room I'd get another power supply in that server. One for the motherboard, the fans, and the boot drive, and another for the rest of the drives and maybe another couple of fans. When I move in my own place it will be better, I'll have a better setup for this type of stuff. I might even invest in a rackmount system and get a rackmount server case. Mind you, those setups cost an arm and a leg.

If you get a rackmount, I'll make you a giant ASCII sign that's the top image of the forum to put beside of it.

P2P reminds me of Peer to Peer. You know, like Limewire and stuff. I doubt it's that, though. xD

Thats what it is, but since my net sucks, it will take a couple centuries to fill that with just p2p stuff. I can only download one or two things at once due to my ISP's concurrent connection limit. If I try any more all flows get taken up and my net stops working.

I use it for VMs too, and basically if I need to store a huge amount of data temporarly (like while rendering video) I can put it there. That and I can download stuff and not worry about it wasting space, I just leave it there "for whenever I have time" like programs to try, movies, etc.
