My Network Died

Post by Pyr-O-Rgasm »

My router is not working. Obviously, since I'm making this post, my modem IS working, though.

Ok, so here's how it lays out. Lately my router has randomly stopped working. The most two recent times were both at night and mere seconds before attempting to do something infrastructure-related on my PSP((go figure)). The first of the recent two I went to sleep and it was working the next day. The last time((which was a couple of days ago)), it stayed down, as it is right now. I have tried multiple times to get it up, but with no success. My mom needs the wirless in order for the living room PC to get internet((I have been hogging the internet without wireless :biglaugh: )), and I need it for my Socom PSP beta test mostly.

The router says it's working((all the correct lights and what-not)). Both PCs show that the network is up and running, but neither computer NOR my PSP can access the internet through the network. I can't even access the router from my PC. Even if I connect my PC directly to the router. So, I'm not sure what's wrong.

Any ideas there, IceTekies?

Have you tried resetting it, and even hard reseting it to factory defaults? Could be a software issue on the router side.

I've reset the little :censored: over 20 times in the past 2 days. It isn't helping. At all.

Sounds like a netgear router incident, the same problem I had with my new super awesome netgear router... the super awesomeness only lasted a couple of weeks then the POS had to be reset so many times and refused to continue working after a while. I now use it as a dust infiltration unit in my basement.

We might end up getting a new router, possibly tonight. Walmart has the SAME Linksys router we have, only it's G and we have B, and it's 60 dollars. Sounds good to be. They have like a 30 dollar one made by Ballance but it's ONLINE only. Bah.

Sooo... We are out now. I'll let you know if it works.

Yeah for 60 bucks you can't go wrong that's for sure.

 $60 bucks is ALOT for a router-

at least here

I could've got one this week for free-after rebates.

I would just unplug the router & let it rest for awhile.

LOL I wish I could get one that cheap here. Even if I order off a wholesale supplier a decent router is near 100 bucks. I can maybe get a crappy one for under 100 but that's rare even.

Been drulling over a 1000mbps switch on tigerdirect though, only a bit over 100 bucks. But I'd have to buy two since one for the server room and one for my room. (I sometimes have two PCs connected)

Yeah. It's an 802.11 G. But it's only got an 11MBPS transfer rate. As if I could care, though. As long as it works. Besides, my actual internet doesn't DREAM of even TOUCHING 11MBPS, so it doesn't matter.

Routers aren't cheap. And 60 dollars isn't alot for one.

Whatever, I'm just glad my network is back up. I love having a personal wireless AND wired network. It makes me all happy inside.

I like that 5 dollar one. But the one I bought is only 10 dollars cheaper there. Walmart was closer.

I'm not all that great right now. I'll probably be moping around while I'm on. I might feel like explaining it later. :(

Actually unless you really have to I'd suggest going wired, faster and more reliable. But depends what type of stuff you do on your network though, if it's strictly internet access then network speed is not really an issue since the outgoing link is the bottleneck.

Oh and don't forget to set WEP encryption and mac address filtering so people can't get on the network from accross the street and stuff.

Oh and I would not trust a $10 router. :o Chances are it's been returned a couple of times. Shipping it to the supplier costs more then that.

And hopefully you'lll feel better soon. :)

Well, are computers are set to far apart. We have to go wireless for now. My PC is connected right into the router, though. So I'm not connecting wirelessly.

But yeah, there's not much to my network. Two PCs and a PSP. I have a non-wireless D-Link router, but stupid AOL doesn't work with D-Link. So for my mom's sake we need Linksys.
