When you thought you had a bad day

Post by Red Squirrel »

Figured I'd make a domain based network just for fun of it so I did, not too many problems, and all was good. Then I decided to upgrade the server's packages in one shot. So I do an apt-get update/upgrade, and it just breaks a bunch of small things that I managed to fix in a few hours. Next day I clean install my workstation since it was overly due. Join it back to the domain and all afterwards. This is where things get bad.

1) Explorer continuously freezes up
2) All my shares keep getting lost
Stuff I forget about...

So figured the domain is not worth it and decided to just get rid of it.

Guess what? I have to restart my whole profile, such as reconfiguring email, etc... a real PIA operation to do as I have lot of accounts. Do the same with the other computer downstairs.

Then I needed to use the printer, it starts saying it's an unknown device, and all that crap, so I reinstall the drivers again. (did all that the day before). It works, but when it starts up, my PC looses voltage and my UPS was too slow at kicking in, so the PC just goes in a dead/standby state due to lack of voltage. So I hit the reset button.

Then I go to call someone, so I open up my phone number database... guess what, mysql decided to die out of no where because of that apt-get thing, but it only decided to die later, since it worked the day before after the "upgrade".

The windows machines seem to be all set, suddently since I'm off the domain nothing is breaking, but I can't speak too soon. But the server is still fubared, I think the "upgrade" actually deleted mysql, and if that happends, that means the databases too. :( I can restore them from a backup, it's just that it's a PIA to do that because they are almost 1GB total.

Oh and another thing on the server that broke is the news parser... really bad too, I have no clue what the heck happened. It hardly parses correctly, and what it does, just goes in thin air, instead of going in the pending database (non mysql) for the bot to post it.

So if you think you have a bad day, think again. A day (well evening, all the worse happened since I got home from work) like this one is not cured by hot chocolate, or cofee. It's cured by alcohol, and lots of it... but I don't drink, but wondering if I should start.

This is crazy... venting actually helped... allot. Somehow I got sql to work, and even managed to fix the news parser, and I did not do anything, but I'm notloosing my shares anymore, and explorer stopped crashing and using up 100% cpu. It just all works!

I should not speak too soon though....... but pray for me that it stays that way! :D
