I happened to stumble across this site trying to fix a problem that I am having, hopefully someone can help explain what it is that I have to do. I have Windows ME and am getting a message at startup saying "Explorer has caused an error in DOSPEX.DLL Explorer will now close." I cannot find this DOSPEX.DLL or any information regarding it. I'm somewhat computer savvy, but would like an explanation in dummy terms of how I can fix this problem. Thanks.

Hmm rather interesting. Maybe you stumbled on a non-public virus. Either we'll have to work together to find out if it really is one, or hopefully we'll eventually see that file on symantec or something.

Using your Windows ME or recovery disk, you should be able to do a repair. ;)

I'm still curious to know what that file is though, there's nothing on google.

Well almost nothing... http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=DOSPEX...le+Search&meta= LOL

This is the closest thing I found...pulled it off a HJT log.

HKLM..Run: [AutoLoaderqF561YXQXKaX] "C:WINDOWSSystem32dospex.exe" /PC="AM.WILD" /HideUninstall
O4 - HKLM..Run: [qsmg3si] dospex.exe

sounds like you have a soundblaster Live "VALUE" sound card?

do you? if so there is a dos driver on that cheap card that will mess up doing start up you need to disable it. as to what it is i cant remember but that is the dos.dill or what you have is close to the same thing i am talking about.

i hate to say it but go to http://help.lockergnome.com and look in that group for messages around october last year or the year before that is when i found the trouble and posted heavy on that forum i think i posted in iceteks about the cure for it too not sure wait yep i did post here at red's the cure for it just cant remember the thread., wait it had something to do with "my winme troubles are fixed"

but thats been so long ago i dont know if red keeps that long of archive. but lockergnome should still have it.

once you get that dos dill disabled you will get rid of the error.

it only happens on winme with the cheap soundblaster live "VALUE" card.

which turns out to be not much of a value.
