This does not sound too good: http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?showtopic=126274

The trial version is available so that you can evaluate the software at your convenience. The trial version is fully featured. If you finish evaulating it and decide IPB is your choice of software, you need to purchase a license, more information about which is at http://www.invisionboard.com/?whypurchase.

So essentially, we don't mind you trying the software for free, but if you want to use it for more than evaluation, please purchase a license

So technically we'll need to get a license, however, I don't think paying hundreds of dollars for a forum is very smart when there is many free alternatives, so I considering going with phpbb. It will be a hard decision but I'm really thinking of it. I'll find or make a converter and go from there.

It's not like IPB will go after us for not registering, but the fact that they really want us to register if we keep using it is not a good thought. I'll wait and see if it actually does come out mid june like they say, if not by that time I should have made the final decision and go with phpbb. I'll have to look at and learn it's code base to see if it's as good as IPB since I will be modding it allot.

Hasn’t that always been their stand? To me, it looks like you will still be able to “evaluate” this software like you always have been. Still, having to worry like that isn’t fun.

Well before it was not exactly like that, it was more that you have to buy only if you want support, but now it seems they want you to buy it anyway. I was looking at phpbb and it lacks allot of the features I would like to see that are here, and it does not seem to have a skinning system, unless I did not look hard enough. I even considered writing my own forum script. But it would be allot of work, and I'd have to learn more about making it easy on the server, and first of all secure.

But as of now the plan is still to wait for IPB 2.0 and I'll do my final decision by then, or if we get accused of not buying it and keeping it, type thing. If I write my own I'd probably call it Freevision or something. :biglaugh:

You can skin it. :) It has templates of HTML like I imagine Invision does.

Yeah I was browsing and found that they are in a folder, just different extensions, but I could always associate that extention with my text editor in explorer and I'd be set. Writing my own forum software would be a good experience, and even something I could put on a resume or something. I think that will be my plan B if we get "caught". But legally we won't be doing anything bad, I can just leave it that we are trying it out permenantly. :D
