This is actually quite interesting: http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/phantom.htm

Only thing I would not like is the monthly fee and the fact that you can't really backup your downloaded games, so let's say you run out of space or accidentally break the machine, you lost all that money.

But it really sounds promissing, and as long as the encryption is strong and that no one pirates the games it will be a whole new gaming system that will be more convinient and less expensive.

I think that they let you download the games as many times as you want, just as long as you purchase it once (probably why there is a monthly fee)
Myself, I'm more interested in one of these: http://www.discoverconsole.com/
I just hope they get one console out there with upgradeable hardware.

hmm i donno but that phantom seems kewl .... i myself am a big time gamer and when ps2 and x-box came out i jumped to grap a ps2 cuz thay make great games but if that phantom starts to catch most of the ps2 like ff and other square-enix games i might think about getting one mainly for being able to download new games when thay come out altho the monthly fee will be a pain in the butt but it looks like ya only need to pay the monthly fee to get access to the downloads so basicly pay it only when your gonna download a few games and another plus side to the phantom may be getting access to older games that are not on the shelfs

i would love to try it out :yo:

The problem with the phantom is that its games are download-only , which means you probably won't see any behemoths like Final Fantasy for download :(
However, if it supports download on demand (download only the portions you need at the moment and download bigger parts in the background while you play), maybe that would work.

heh. I've heard about the Phantom, problem is though, that name may just have a double meaning, at least according to HardOCP. Now I won't say who's right and who's wrong, but I wouldn't be pre-ordering anything quite yet...

all sony or microsoft will have to do to beat that console i is to have the same idea or prinsible but have no monthly fee. just the games and th console itself. That would kill the phantom.

It would be possible too, all they need to do is enable to download the games off a regular site, but have their own OS on the system. To pay for the game they can either have the same type of system as phantom, or that you have to get a disk of some sort as well.

But any way it goes, digital media is not physical and is easy to pirate, so I think the whole idea of charging for any type of digital media will never work on in the end time. Even the idea of charging for software does not work the way companies want it to, people like you and me pirate it to avoid paying the heafty fees. It's a circle because if no one would do that, it would maybe be cheaper, so we would not have to do that. :D
