winpup, Win32:Startpad[Trj]???

I have Windows Me. I recently downloaded a free anti-virus program and discovered there are about a thousand files infected with Win32:Startpad[Trj]
The first path is c:WINDOWSSYSTEM13953799.exe and it's just endless from there! How can I fix this mess? I'm afraid to delete the files and Avast anti virus can't repair it. Can someone please help me? I think Startpad is part of winpup

Sounds like a pretty bad infection. Try deleting those files, backup your data, and hope for the best. If you get problems because they are missing, the best bet is to do a clean install.

Make sure you turn off system restore before running your AV program. Try running this free online scan. Be sure to tick the repair tool before running.

Thanks bunches! I got rid of all the infected files in my system folder. but apparantly it has made itself a home in my restore folder. Someone told me to make a backup disk, but my floppy drive is fried. Thanks anyway, you guys have been a lot of help.

Once you turn off system restore, it will drop your restore points, which is where the infected files are backed up. When the system is cleaned, you can turn restore back on and there should be no infected files.
