I've had 2 drives crap out on me. The first was a Quantum 512MB drive that I tested with 17volts AC, which was a dumb thing to do, nothing happened, but when I later on went to use it with a normal power source 12VDC it caught on fire.
Then a 10GB fijitsu died from overheating. It was the one in the server that used to host this site for about a month, till the whole thing melted down from heat, then I hosted on the BSOD-o-matic P3.
Both drives I did not really loose valuble data, which is good. The 10 gig was a gradual thing, and I only found out it was crapped out later on when all it's data was obsolete (old databases etc...).
I witnessed a few drives crap out though. Man a good lesson to backup as these things can happen any time. You hear a "ding ding" sound as the head hits the sides of the drive. One at school did that.
Anyone else have a drive crap out on them?

not me but i had to fix my friends hp computer when his went out and he kept getting free ones from other of his friends but they were all bad also.
it was making me crazy i would format and install win98 on it for him set up things and go home come back to finish with new programs and the dang hd was wiped again. finally got it scaned from a floppy disk version of scandisk and it would not keep scanning because it kept finding bad sectors it was so bad it stopped the floppy drive from scanning?? did that on every hd he got from the other friends
we only got it fixed by him buying a hd with win98 already installed. but now its working.

I've had one die on me, and it was also one that we used in the old server, 10GB, Fujitsu. It died about a month after we brought that server down, and at that time it wasn't in my possesion, so I didn't lose anything, but one of my friends had a lot on it and that went good bye, nothing he can't replace, but it's still something you don't like to see.
I've also had one resurrect itself. I got it, it was dead, then it came back to life again...

Hmm is that the one we had on top on my 10 gig in the server? I think they actually both died now that I remember. I remember I could almost get a 1st degree burn touching it.jryan wrote: I've had one die on me, and it was also one that we used in the old server, 10GB, Fujitsu.
