Upgrade scheduled for: Thursday, September 25th, 2003

important edit (we WILL be upgrading)

<hr />

I decided I will NOT be upgrading the board to 1.2. I was starting to change the skin, and the html is SO different it's crazy. It seems to be using xhtml and some stuff I don't quite know that well, so I'm going to spend time learning it and wait till 2.0 comes out, they said in a few months, and it will take a few months to redo it anyway, so no use, really. I think I'll simply keep working on the cybervillage feature instead. 1.2 is pretty good so I can just imagine how good 2.0 will be. So might as well just be patiant and wait. There's good features in 1.2, but not worth the hassle to upgrade yet.

That said, I'm going to work on the stock exchange section of the cybervillage now. B)

That's alright. :) We don't really need 1.2 anyway. :)

XHTML isn't much different from HTML. You just have to keep a few things in mind. It won't take you long. It didn't take me long at all, and now I do all my pages in XHTML strict. If it didn't take me long, it won't take you long for sure!

I hope 2.0 is really good. I really like Invision, and I am looking forward to all these new versions!

I was talking to some people at Invision Power Support Forums and even though 2.0 might come out in months, they will be happy if it's anywhere near june. Technically this is almost a year so what the heck, I'll go ahead and redo the skin. I realized it won't be that hard since most of the variables are actually the same, only difference is that the default skin is more complex because of the XHTML or XML or whatever it is but all I do is wipe paste my skin structure, make sure the vars are correct and wipe out the XHTML stuff and I'm all set. In the process I will make my skin more standard by using
instead of
etc. I'll try. But since there's table width="" etc it won't be 100% standard since most of the table manupulation is not standard unless done through css, and if I start having a css template for all the sizes it will get very messy. CSS is good for colors and such, but I rather not use it for sizes.

There's a few variables that seem to not be there in 1.2 such as the global table width for the forums, but it seems the wrapper covers that part anyway.

So as an uptate to this post, I WILL be doing the upgrade. I'm hoping to be 100% done before Christmas, to push myself a little, by the end of October.

It will most likely be a scheduled upgrade where I will post 24 hours in advance and then the next day I'll close the forum for the upgrade. Depending on how well the upgrade script works, it can take 5 minutes to several hours. I hope it goes smooth and I hope it won't involve restoring a database, since our database is now too big to restore (times out).

Meanwhile I might still do work for that stock exchange script. Not sure how it will work yet, though.

Ok, my fault, went and tried to install red hat on that P3 and just dual boot it so I can go into windows when I'm not using it (it's my parant's PC  ) but it's a no go. To POS of a computer to handle the installer. The 486 can take it, but I can't see what I'm doing because I don't have any more then 16 colors on that video card.

So back to the old win98 server that is slow, I'll continue working on the skin. I made a progress meter in my sig to give everyone an idea of my progress. Next week end is supost to be a long weekend, so two nights in a row of going to bed late will help a lot. This weekend has too much going on, like I have to leave in about an hour and I have no clue for how long, so no use bothering today. Maybe tomorow though. B)

I'd say that I'm probably very close to being half way done redoing the forum skin. I have the PM manager, the user CP, the mod CP, help section, topic view as main sections to edit and as well as the top header, which should be easy enough to do as I can pretty much use the same html, or I might redesign it completly, not sure yet, After that it will only be fixing little things here and there. I think I missed something here but I know that's pretty much all what's left to do.

For the mod/PM/user control panels I'll probably keep it as it is and just change the css, since there's like 20 templates to edit just for the user cp, then more for the messenger etc.... and to consider how often it is viewed, just changing the color will do the job. And the mod cp is only seen by a few of us so it's no big deal if it's not skinned perfectly.

After the skin is completed, all I'll have to do is add the cybervillage and make it work properly with the new php files (post $$$ etc) and that's about it. Once I do the upgrade I will be doing alot of other coding to finalize things, but it should not be noticable.

Here's some features that we will have in 1.2:

- Enhanced quick reply box that will allow you to preview posts first by brining you to the main post box with your post intact. (good for adding last minute smilies)

- better admin toys to play with

- personal photo in profile, sort of like an avatar, but seperate from it.

- more organized pre-installed avatar gallery. Later on I'll make many categories to choose from such as anime etc.

- ability to add a poll to an exiting topic

- enhanced sql error compatibility and ability to quickly wipe entire database at the push of a button. (J/K)

And much more!

I'm hoping to complete the upgrade by the end of October, but if I can keep it up I an maybe even finish it much earlier. It all goes on how smooth the database conversion will go. I will take many steps before to make the downtime as minimal as possible.

Wohoo, doing great.

I cut a few corners, instead of doing the user cp from scratch I decided to just play with the css until it looks half decent and it turned out ok. Same with the mesenger cp and the mod cp looks a little weird, but it's not like it's used too much anyway.

The two main things left are the topic view, help section (the css made it look ok but it's a little dark so I might redo it) and the register/login section.

I even did the header and it looks great. I changed the way the buttons will be shown, I just need to redo the buttons so they look better, but the graphics will wait till after the html is done. The upgrade is almost half way done. I think the second half will go much faster, I'm not using 100% precision on my meter that I got in my sig. :D

Everything is going pretty smooth right now. I think I'll be able to officially do the upgrade this weekend, September 26th. :) There's no school friday and if my parants are working it will be a perfect day to run the upgrade and finalize everything. If my parants are off I'll still do it, but it will be slower. I code better when I'm alone with no distractions. But I'll probably even do the upgrade on the 25th after the school dance which ends at 12:00. I usually do the lighting durring dances. And you all know how my coding rules when it's past 12:00AM :biglaugh:

hehe that's cool! You can hit refresh to see all the errors durring the upgrade J/K

If you see something like "Database not found" try not to panic.

But if you see a brand new IB board with no posts, then it's time to panic. :roflmao2:

welcome to my world of 1.2 problems./.. 1.2 was nice but there are a lot of things that just do not work. I tried to fix some errors by reuploading the whole board, and that made things worse. I still have my backup of the mysql data, but I can't get the board to use it.... :(

If worse comes to worse, I'll try to figure out what are the main differences of the SQL tables and write a C++ program that will convert the database, but the problem is uploading it, now that the database is bigger then the sql upload limit (1MB I think) it won't let me restore it, and that can be a BIG problem.

Wow, I'm almost done doing the skin!

I think I'm actually done but there might be a few things to fix here and there. There's some stuff in the moderation sections that is not really using the main layout but the colors are ok, I might just keep it how it is or fix it all. But so far I hardly cut any corners exept for the usercp which I did by editing the css instead of each individual template. But it still looks good.

Some buttons I had to redo because I did not keep the psds (doh! :headbang: ) but I'm sure the new skin will be even better then this one, it's the same one, but enhanced and somewhat a little different.

I forgot to mention, I'll most likely upgrade tomorow. Durring this upgrade the board will be closed and may also have errors, but if all goes smooth I should b e ok. For maybe a few hours after there might be intermittent errors here and there as I add the cybervillage stuff in the php files. I've also been expecting another version 1.2.1 or something like that which fixes a few bugs, so it is maybe possible I decide to wait, but I think I'll go ahead, either way there won't be that much php files to edit anyway.

Oh, and this upgrade will take place late at night, past 12:00am since I'm probably going to be doing the lights for the dance at school.

Ok, looks like I'll be doing the upgrade very shortly, I mean, like before midnight! Turns out there's no school dance so I won't be gone to do the lights.

I just need to double check everything in case I missed a section, but I think everything is working fine. Only things I did not skin good are email related things because I could not get it to work on the local server, but I think I'll stick to no user validation system, just register and post. It's more convinient for newbies to register and be able to post right away, and we don't have troll problems anyway. If it becomes a problem in the future I'll then skin those sections and set it.

I also need to do a few practise runs with the upgrade script since it seems there might be a problem doing the upgrade.

Hmm, the more I think of how great it is that we are so close, I might go ahead and run it in a few hours once I see everything is finalized. Whohoo!

The upgrade is now technically complete. I simply need to do a bit of php editing such as the cybervillage stuff, but all in all, everything is upgraded.

I will also be remaking all the user groups and restructure the permissions and such. Because of the permission masks, I can give individual user permissions which is great!

Lots of nifty new features in this new script. Now I'm testing it around, making sure everything works ok. So far so good. ;) (crap, I'll have to replace that constupated wink with the one I made  )

Something like this happened at the AF. Editing a post will fix it. I'll edit any posts I see that are deformed like that (without modifying the content of course) unless Red has any objections. :)

Crap I forgot about that problem. Yes go ahead and edit them, and that goes for everyone if you see your own posts like this, edit them. You don't have to change a thing. Just hit edit and submit. With mozilla it goes well since you can go through a whole thread and hit the middle button to open all the windows and then hit submit on all of them. I had it setup once so it would not open the tab right away, but now it does, so I always have to switch back.

I'll also be on the look out and fix these. :awesome:
