"A" drive not responding

I have had problems with my PC's this week. I got home and found they had both had hard drive crashes. The XP recovery disk repaired one computer, that is now fine. The other one I reinstalled XP onto. However now I need to reinstall the network driver off a 3.5" floppy. The floppy device "A" is showing in "My Computer", A device cheque appeared to show it as working properly. When ever I click the "A" drive though I get an error message "Please insert a disk into drive A:" Does anyone know what I am missing/ not doing correctly?

PS... Before you say it... there is a disk in drive A: (

Hmm, I had this problem before and it turned out to be a miss configuration in the bios and cabling (did so many tries with stuff I can't remember what fixed it) but I assume you did not do any changes like that. But since it's both computers, I suspect it's a virus on the network, so I would get that checked first. Did you try different bootable disks? It could be that particular disk too. Do check the bios though as some viruses can probably access the bios, it would not suprise me if there's some that do, as I know some can flash it, and it may be the problem but let's hope it's not.

Checked all the obviouis things in the BIOS and teh cabling (several times)

The other thing is the D Partition on the other computer has dissapeared,

A VIRUS is possible but not showing up after a scan, could it be hidden on the D: ? How do I get the D: back?

Hmm not too sure here. Did you try using fdisk or something to see if it shows up? I have a feeling it's gone for good. That can't be good. There are recovery programs for lost partitions though but they are hard to get and expensive.

dude go to the web site.

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com download the iso image.

get a cdrom in the burner, then use a program like nero or roxio to burn the iso image to the cdr disk.

take that out of the burner and write boot cd. take that cd and place it in the MASTER CDROM DRIVE on your computer turn off the computer.

turn on the computer and press what ever you have to do to get in to the bios set the boot up seq.. to make it boot from the cdrom first.

save and exit the bios. it will reboot and use the cdrom you then get a choice of what to run in the program. look for the one that will work with your hd. it should check out all the stuff for you. there are several good programs there. you have to press the number of the program to get it to start. and then you need to reboot after you run the program to get the bootcd menu back.

there is an anti virus program and a couple partitioning programs on the cd.

i have it and it does work on win98 win98se winme and winxp all of which i have and tested on.

just make sure you put it in the MASTER CDROM DRIVE.

did you disable all virus protection/system restore before doing the virus scan? That could hide the virus (if there is one)
