I know what's causing the memory leak. win.com. Get rid of it, your computer will run so much faster!
No seriously, it brobably is windows, I've heard ME has issues with memory leaks.

I've been using ME for over three years, and have not encountered memory problems (most of the time), but when it does start to act up, I usually run Norton System works, and if all else fails, I just format... but you may not be able to do that in your case, depending on how much information you need that is still stored on the computer in question...
There should be some freeware programs online that could help you find the leak... but I haven't checked for any in a long, long time...
Good luck.

some body said some where else not on a help forum but one for something else,
that they thought it might be the fan stopping and getting the ps hot. and that might be cutting out and looking like a mem leak .. is that possiable do any of you think?
it is only a 225 or 250 watt ps.

How much memory do you have? Are you sure it's a memory leak?
From what I read there was a flaw in ME that can cause memory leaks.
Have you tried going to PC Pitstop and testing there? You can post your test results to their help forum.

The only info I could find on it was old forum posts. Evidently at that time there was no patch from M$oft for it, this was before XP was released. There were complaints that M$oft should fix ME before releasing XP. I couldn't find any info as to whether the patch had ever been released.

well i went there to pcpitstop and it told me to defragment the hard drive, turn on the hardware accleration to full, and to close up some things in the restricted sites zone that were open.
to fix the file cache from 16 mbs to 64 mbs and that there were hard drive issues but it does not tell me how to fix the hard drive issues which are the cache is not fast enough it say it should be faster.
and it said the bios is not seeing the proper amount of installed ram. it is only seeing 128 mbs and windows is seeing 256 mbs of ram.
i think the ram would be seen if i could remember how to go in and turn the boot up ram scan back on. i went in some where and turned it off cause it was taking a long time to boot. now it looks like it might need to be on.
that is all the pc check up said to do. and none of it fixed the trouble but as you all know i am not a programmer and i dont know if the hd issues are fixable or if that means it is going out shortly.

Did you make changes in your BIOS? Is that what you meant by turning the boot up RAM back on?
Tapping the delete key on boot up will bring up the BIOS screen in ME.
There is an option to email your results to a friend on the PC Pitstop test page. It's a URL in bold that you can copy and paste. That page will have the link to the forum, where you can sign up and ask questions. Post that URL of your results in the help forum when you post your question. They always want to see your test results when you have a problem. Don't worry about your IP showing on your test, it is only visible to you.

yep i seen that wren but like i said it only told me the stuff that i fixed or said in the last post but the only one i cant figure out how to do is change the hard drive cache speed,
and i cant remember how to turn the boot up memory scan back on i did it in the registry some where before i think. not the bios.
and if that is not what will fix the bios to see the proper amount then i am not sure what will.
the only thing that was colored in red was the hd issues and when i got to that page it was just coloring the cache speed in yellow so not sure why it is in red. it said nothing else seems like it is a site to get you to buy the diskminder program but it did not seem to say much that was able to be fixed or needs fix. and it did not tell me how to do much of that.?
but good site for a quick test.
i did however turn on the vcooler.exe program when windows starts and that seems to have helpped some on the jerkyness but not much and it only works for a couple of degrees from 114 F to 105 F is the only lower amount i seen.
but it did tell me the amd duron is getting hotter then i thought as the sticky mouse movements have slowed some what when i did that too. so it is getting there just not sure how far there is yet??

Ok, that was why I suggested you go to the help forum and ask about what you are trying to do. Those techs are exellent at troubleshooting. They will walk you through anything you need to know, believe me, I've been there. Just ignore the ads. Some of the techs don't like then either.

man this windows me compter is strange.
you aint going to believe this now wren.
but i been messing around and going back to fix things and change things and did defrag in safe mode like the pcpitstop site said to do.
i have been going back and forth running the tests and finding out what was getting changed or NOT.
the thing is this
the hard drive issues are the hd cache speed is too slow. this i found out is caused by background running programs. so that is fine just turn off the programs and it would be fixed.?
found out the ram is being seen correctly in the bios and in windows. it is just being reported as incorect.
found out they made the place to turn off or on the boot up mem test in a different name in the bios now. so i got that turned back on.
after all that i did the defrag in safemode. then went back to pcpitstop to test for a 100% good computer. but that was not the case
the tests were all done and when i got the results of them guess what.
you got it they were the same test results as i had run the other day and this was a newly run test i did not run the previous tests results.
i did the defrag as it said and it still said i had to defrag cause of the same errors.
i have come the the conclusion that the site is for selling diskmender and other software and will tell you the same errors until you buy that program and install it. then when it sees the programs file it is looking for it will say all is good on your computer.
so thanks for this site but i am not going to use it again since it does not work.
i did take the computer out of the desk and move the fan in the lower front to the rear now there are 3 exhaust fans and one intake fan on the side) and the cpu is running 5 to 10 degrees cooler now. but the case is up 5 to 7 degrees hotter now.
i also set the L2 cache for 64kbs on the amd athon/duron cpu and did some other untweeking and tweeking in the bios.
so now the sticky mouse still shows up but now it is not too bad on it.

Well, I don't know what to tell you to do now. It's gone beyond my meager knowledge. I don't understand the heat problem with all the fans you are running. You might just need a bigger PSU.
Did your test show the CPU running at 0%?

no it said 100% because i have other things like firewall and anti virus software, and a cpu cooler, i will not turn off when on the web for nobody or any reason.
but i know it is not running that all the time and it is a new amd duron,
i am really begining to think it is the psu. as it is strange no matter what i do it never changes the sypthoms. but once again with this computer as with the other one my wallet will do the thinking for me.

If it's a new AMD, you probably do need a PSU.

Yep, AMD is hard on p ower. In fact, I only have a punny little 300 watt and it's going bananas. My 12V is at 13V, my 5 is at 4 etc... but I can't afford one now.
My next one will be a 400Watt, dual fans. It's not a brand name though, it's "best power" which seems like a typical no name brand, but I'll just hope for the best.

well if i get a new psu it will be a new antec 450 watt one. as that is what i got the last time for the other computer and it is doing good.
it is also the one with the cool senser in for the psu fan. which is also good..
i think i will get another fan also to put back in the front to help keep the case cooler again. seems like amd's need more cool air then i thought.. but two more fans and it will sound like a b36 bomber. as they had six props on too.

Yes, AMDs do need more cooling and are power hungry, that's why I have a Pentium.
I keep hearing how AMDs give you more bang for the buck, but if you have to get a bigger PSU and extra fans to keep it running properly...where's the bang?

I don't really have a need for anything faster either. My 1.6 Ghz P4 is enough for me. When I build my own computer, I will probably get something more powerful, but I don't see why I should spend all that money for the faster ones when the cheaper ones do me just fine.Wren wrote: Well, I recon' I don't have that much need for speed. I like Pentiums. I think I will use that for my next computer instead of an AMD.
EDIT: Odd... When I quote Wren, her " " emoticon doesn't show.

I've actually not bothered replacing my 250W psu, or adding extra fans for my AthlonXP, I just replaced the stock PSU and CPU coolers with models I've preffered. The way I look at it, you can have the pc with the best cooling on earth, but in my books, as long as my pc runs and does what I want it to do without killing itself and as long as I don't leave it on 24/7 like alot of people I know, then I'm fine.
