Msn Messenger 6 Preview Edition

Post by jryan »

Hey all of our MSN Users out there,

If you fancy using a version of MSN Messenger with some of the improvements offered by the MSN Plus! add-on, then fancy no more. MSN Messenger 6 Preview is out, and it's pretty damn good. There's features I would never have dreamed of seeing in MSN , but there they are. There could be more improvements made to it, but that's the way with any piece of software. The only thing that really bugs me about it is the fact that you can hide the pictures, but they re-appear, or you can turn them off and have no access to them. (Download, install and use to see what I mean).

Enjoy

I have been using msn 5 for quite sometime now and use the webcam and audio features. Ian and I downloaded msn 6 and tried to use it but can't get the audio to work. The webcam is fine ... we see each other just fine but have no audio. Ian receives a message saying that their is a nat problem but I don't receive it on my computer.

We were wondering if anyone knows if there is diffferent port settings for 6. We have never had a problem with 5 at all. Any suggestions????

Did you make sure your mic is properly plugged and configured. (sound mixer settings). You might also have to run a wizard in msn to get it configured in msn as well as it checks volume and stuff.

We both did that Red Squirrel .. and I am using 5 right now as I am posting this. I talk to Ian everyday in England. You can see my mic level moving up and down as I speak but no sound is heard by Ian or I. You would think if we have 5 going with webcam and audio the settings wouldn't be that far off for 6.

Hmm strange. I have not looked at 6 yet so I'm not sure of the settings, but is there a place for "mic boost" by any chance? There's a setting in windows for that, but maybe there's one in msn that overrides Windows'.

I have the mic boost ticked ... I really believe it has something to do with the network settings beings Ian receives a warning on his computer about that. Thats why I asked if anyone knew if there was different port settings maybe we needed to change.

Hmm might be network as the voice part probably uses a different port then msn as it probably forms a p2p connection between both PCs, I don't think they would make it send the voice to the msn servers, especialy if they run iis. Are both your firewalls letting them communicate? I'm not sure what port it would be, but the firewall would most likely pop up a box asking.

Bingo ... got it to working! We updated our routers firmware and that did the trick. Thanks for all the suggestions Red Squirrel.

I don't think it needs to listen on ports though... But I still did not download it, I'm using 5.0 and according to a netstat this is what I get:

baym-cs85.msgr.hotmail.com:1863

But there's no actual listening port. If there is on 6.0 then it won't work behind a router unless you port forward, and even then, msn will probably report the local IP and not the external one. Sort of what the problem is with using kazaa behind a router.

Actually, Red, I have found a list of ports used by the MSN Messenger application (through a bit of searching online). "new user", you could try opening these ports on your Router (but it does open a large port range) or you could visit the manufacturer's website for information about updating your Router's firmware.

Ports 6891-6900 enable File send,
Port 6901 is for voice communications

Allows Voice, PC to Phone, Messages, and Full File transfer capabilities.
IN TCP 6891 - 6900
IN TCP 1863
IN UDP 1863
IN UDP 5190
IN UDP 6901
IN TCP 6901

I'm just wondering but how many of you just did the simple thing for getting sound to work like going to the control panel and then to systems and or to sounds and setting the sound you want to work with the programs.

or for the voice trouble how about going to the speaker in the system tray or to the multimedia program in the control panel and getting the mixer controls up and then selecting the ones you want to turn on or mute? which ever yours does when checked,.

not sure if that will help in any of the above but i just did not see the simple pointed out anywhere so i did it. :)

Hmm this sounds like something that should be told to MS since it seems many people get this problem, it's probably a fault in the actual program. Just a thought. I did not experience it yet, but I did not use that feature yet either. :)

This is probably why this thread got so many views, google searches for this same problem. :)

I don't know if this is relevant, but the Windows VIA sound drivers killed my sound. It is listed as an update for my machine but I tried it 3 times with no luck. I had to go the mobo mfg site to get my sound working. :)

Arty Muffin wrote: Hi people,

I've been having the same sort of problem with MSN 6 in that there is no sound. My friend and I are able to see each other on our webcams, but are unable to hear each other. When I request a conversation, and he accepts, my voice meter does not seem to register sound (no green), but when he requests a conversation, and I accept, the meter moves as if there is sound. I've configured my firewall already, as well as my router, and have run the setup utility provided for audio by msn. He had originally had problems with his drivers, but found some to reinstall.. those later crashed (after we had the problems). I use XP and he has 98. I'm not sure what else to try.... any suggestions?
Could be wrong, but don't you both have to be on XP for the full set of features to work?

Also, had the same problems re audio and routers, I think thats the way MSN uses the protocols. and NAT routers.

I believe the newer UPnP routers have no problems.

I can try audio on MSN, it fails miserably, try it on Yahoo, it works fine, go figure.

Hmm that would make sense. Some of those features are probably part of windows XP and not messenger. Microsoft and their "program integration" moves. :D

I have a question...

What is the difference between Windows Messenger and MSN? :grade11math: I have Windows Messenger 4.7. What am I missing out on? :grade11math:

EDIT: Nevermind... I found out. In case anyone was curious, Windows Messenger is a watered-down version of MSN messenger. MSN Messenger has more "fun" stuff with it...

I am downloading it right now. B)

Actually, Windows messenger is the program for spammers to send popups to people. It's not *for* that, but it's all that it's used for. On a network it can be used for admins to send messages.

Yes, there is a service named that, but Windows XP also comes with this Windows Messenger. You can still use it even if the service is disabled. :)
