1 Fan Can Do A Big Difference!

Post by Red Squirrel »

I just did my first official mod, much better than the practice one. :P

I got the fan holes messed up (it's hard to mark it with a pencil when it does not fit in the fan hole. :P) but like someone said at another tech site, functionality is better than bling bling. May look crappy but does the job!

Louder too, never realized it till the fan was installed, it seemed to not do a difference when I just plugged it in! The 120mm one did not fit NO WHERE! There was a few mm missing where I wanted to put it! So I put a 80mm one instead. I *could* put it on the side panel that I take off the open the PC, but I risk the chance of ripping the cable out of the PSU if I forget to unplug it. I would do something like that. But if ever I decide to add one, it will be a 120mm blowing right on the CPU fan! Hopefully it would fix my 58C temp I keep getting no matter what! I would get lower if I'd buy some thermal paste or something. But it will void my warranty. :roflmao2: :roflmao2: (me, use a waranty? :P )

Hopefully this will equalize the air in my case so I don't get dust all over, just where the fans are!

Less dust, more air flow, and cooler ambiant temps. My tempature meters did not change that much but just by putting my hand inside the case I can feel it being cooler, and I feel air coming out of the small openings, instead of going in.

B)

hey red the new cheiftech case i have has the fan on the remove side door. they just used a long bit of wire and plugged it in to the power plug for the hard drives it is not on a sensor but it is working all the time.

your right on how cool it can be by adding one fan.
but also right on how much noise it makes

did you forget to look at the post or did you loose the one i did on pc411 about the why to cool your case.?

:no no no:

well here it is in short again.

take your case and take all the sides and top and front off the metal unit frame.

now on the frame look for any holes in the top, bottom, and side.

now take your handy dandy duct tape and cover them up.

now look for any holes on the back that do not have a fan in front of them. and tape them up also.

now look on the front of the case in the lower half of the case look at all the holes and LEAVE THEM THERE that is the only place you should have air coming in at. unless you have a fan on the side or bottom of the case then you can bring air in there also.

the air will find its way in around the small slots around the cdrom drives so that is fine.

but you need to have more air going out the back through the power supply and just beside the amd cpu to keep it cool.
as a matter of fact amd's seem to be cooler when there are more fans on the back of the computer then the front.

doing all that will make a nice straight wind tunnel out of your computer making cool in the front and out the back

you seem to forget that and you also posted the same type of thing in the article you did. but you also forgot about the cooled clay tile you had it sitting on.

what happend did you just think that stuff did not work.

Yeah that works too. I had most of my holes blocked with foil paper (better heat conductor) but it was so hot that even the alumunim got pretty hot, so now with this fan in the front/side it helps alot. I may add a 120mm blowing directly on the CPU later on. That will for sure drive the temps a few degrees lower (I held it there to see and it worked).

Yeah it's ok to do, but I heard stuff about the FCC not liking that too much, but a case with a window ain't any different. Other than that I don't see what would be wrong. However with the case closed there's more air flow. It all depends on how many case fans you have. If you have a setup like mine, (see the mod thread somewhere in the case section) it's best to keep it closed because there's already lot of air, but if you have like a PSU exhaust and cpu fan and that's it, there's not much air flow, so a big boxfan would work well.

I dont think so red.

i just added another hd to that jukebox unit of mine now there are 4 hd's in it 2 cdroms. and i only have the two ps exhaust fans. and to little drive bay fans in the computer.

and it is a mini tower so there is not much room in it either. i took the case off while adding the hardrive and making sure it worked,

so i thought to check out the way it would cool. it got hotter with the case off. and it is sitting under an airconditoning vent and the temp has been in the 105 f, out side down here in texas so the ac was on when i had the case off. and it was blowing cool air. :grade11math: so with all that extra cool ac air it should have been cool on the computer temps. but it was not it was hotter with the case off.

of course this is the one i have all the holes taped up on and it only pulls air in from the lower front and the drive bay but it only has the one ps fan that you can see from the out side the other is on the inside of the computer to pull air to the ps. so it is kind of like having one exhaust fan and one middle fan and two little drive bay fans.

but still with the case on i could feel the air being pulled in from the lower front more then from the drive bay fans which are just keeping air going over the hds. :)

:biglaugh: :biglaugh:  :o :o

On the other hand though i did use a small round desktop fan on the outside before.

only it was not on a computer. i had a vcr that kept getting hot so i tape up a cardborad tunnel to the fan then to the vcr vents. that fan was blowing so much air in the vcr it started to get frost bite. :bsod:  :roflmao2:

but the vcr finally had to be thrown out as it just got worn out from heavy use and the parts would cost more then a new vcr so we got rid of that one. but it shows you can use an out side fan just make sure there is no place for the air to go from the fan except into the case of what your trying to cool then you can get a lot of air in that way. but the back pressure noise is a monster headache maker

Yes you get better airflow with it closed, but with a big fan blowing on the components while it's off also helps better, but if there's nothing, you're right, it's best with the case closed.

Haha poor VCR. :D

I'd like to do that, duct the A/C vent to my PC. But I don't want ducting all over my room. It's going to look like ET or something.

I have to get a pic of this mod that I did. Its ugly and ghetto, but it damn well lowered my heat on my 2 harddrives that were an incch from eachother from atleast 100F to 40F. I just took and extra cpu fan and put it in the front of the case, spliced the wires to a power wire comming from the psu and the fan is running great. My temps are down alot and I actually took an 100mm fan from another psu and have that on the side of my case.

Ghetto mods galore!

Red, what about a ghetto mod, subforum for the hardware section. I'll own that place.

Hmm, something to think about, I might put it in case and cooling though but good idea.
