In the defense of Microsoft, I have to say that compatibility is an advantage to Microsoft Products. :D

That is true. But there's a way to run M$ appz on Linux I think... but I never tried it though.

Yup, there is a way to run windows programs on linux, a little program called wine. Now as for how well it works, I don't know, but it's getting better all the time. There are also some commercial spin-offs directed towards certain applications. WineX from transgaming is a commercial app that boasts combatibility with windows Directx games. Also I forget what it's called but a new product was recenty released that offers compatibility with microsoft office and certain business apps.

Now to the question at hand. Why is Windows better than linux? Well I would say that windows has brought standards to a fragmented pc market... but linux has shown that open standards can be just as sucessful, in fact even windows uses a few open standards.

Well maybe you could argue that windows is easier to use... except for the fact that OSX, tivo, a host of consumer electronic gadgets have shown that if you put a pretty face on top of a unix derived base, the end use doesn't know the difference.

You could say because microsoft is a name you can trust...except for the fact that they discover new vulnerabilites every week, and that it's faulty code is responsible for pretty much all of the worst virus outbreaks.

But the real reason is becuase microsoft has a lot of money and a bunch of lawyers.

Usually, I never have a need to run Windows applications on Linux, since Linux almost always has a free alterative. B) But when I do, I have found Wine to work sometimes, and then fail miserably other times. :(
