Yes it will. Right now we are still in a small risk of loosing the whole infrastructure due to the fact that servers are against our ISP's TOS. The worse thing that can happen is that we'd be asked to remove it, but I can't see anything worse, as they would not just cut off the connection right away. And possibly I could convinve them to let us and we could advertise them or something...

But once I actually get started and get info on starting my business, we will be months away from webhosting, as I'll simply have to make enough money to pay off biz dsl and get some customers in advance to start building from. I'll have the server upgraded before then so I can play around with Unix and get to know it better. I don't want to start a hosting company and have no clue what I'm doing.

How are your servers against the TOS? :)

You don't have to say, but I am just curious.... ;)

Our TOS for internet access states that
Lease charges for use of the ADSL modem and telephone service splitter and the ability to connect up to two PC's (NO SERVERS ALLOWED)
... so you can see where it's a little shady. I asked Red to check and see whether that means "No Web Servers" or whether it means "No Network Servers" which would in turn be distributing the bandwidth to other computers on the network, but I don't know whether Red's checked it fully with the ISP. I know he was inquiring as to whether he had to get something higher than Home ADSL but I don't know whether he asked about his own personal little web server.

Maybe we'll find out one day.... you never know.. I can't see how it would not be permitted, because if I'm not mistaken, most builds of Windows XP come with IIS in the system...

Anyway...

Yeah, I never actually asked, since they would say it clearly, I rather just say "I did not know" in the event of a port scan. But this is not anything illegal and even with my mom working there she would not get affected (unless I argue and deny to remove it) so we should be safe, and like windstalker said, they might mean routing servers and stuff. I don't see why they would not allow them, since it's just like using KaZaA, or uploading files to a host (which turns out to be the same bandwidth anyway - same files). Some of you might remember the crappy tripod forum before PC411 (well it was PC411, but when it first started). If ever we'd get asked to remove the server, we'd be back there!

However, the good news is, they do allow servers with business adsl, and we'd have a static IP which would make a static domain easier to get (possibly a domain name if funds with allow us). I'd probably stick with dynu anyway, but then I would not need to worry about getting a Unix version of it for when we upgrade, since I could just punch in the IP and there you go!

I'll be working in monitering the cominication/routing systems so I can just switch our line with a fiber optic, no one should know... just kidding. :)

We can also get T1 for an outrageous price, but I guess if I really get a hosting company going it would pay itself. My options that I'm willing to give sound promissing as well (php, mysql, etc , unlimited everything etc etc)
But the hosting company is something that will be done later on after I get a computer repair business going. Once I have enough money for the infrastructure and have guarantee customers - we'll be ready to boom! Maybe I can build myself a DeathStar mainframe. :drull:

Some of the things you may want to consider in the near future for your server are:

1. Install and Run Lavasoft's AdAware w/ updates frequently.
2. Install and then insure weekly updates and scan for Viruses.
3. Acquire Norton Utilities and run WinDoctor, it may find things you didn't know about.

These are just general things to keep in mind, they also don't hurt the everyday PC either...
