What is the best template for a spellcaster (for pvm)
A necromancer mage is usually the most popular choice because it combines the versatility of magery with necromancer curses and necromantic forms. This combination is arguably the most powerful for champion spawns. Soloing monsters is adequate, provided you can keep your distance and cast in time. Some of the faster monsters could pose a problem, as well as monsters who reflect spells.
Mage spellweaver is likely the most powerful for the cost of skills as spellweaving only requires 1 skill and not 2 or 3 for its effectiveness. The obvious downfall, of course, is finding enough spellweavers to create a L6 arcane focus to increase the power of your spells. Without a high arcane focus, the skill is almost useless. If you CAN find enough spellweavers, word of death is of considerable use as you can easily do up to three digits worth of damage to a maximum of 666 per cast of word of death (special criteria must be followed to actually achieve this damage but you'll get the hang of it).
There are plenty of other interesting mage combinations. Many players enjoy playing a warrior mage. Tamer mage is also quite popular. For the bold, you might try a mage bard, parry mage or archer mage. Magery can be fit into a lot of templates as it only requires magery and eval int with the possibility of a regeneration skill (focus or med) on the side. It's up to you which support skills you want to add to it but it only really needs those two "key" skills. Ninja mages have also been popular in the past.
This brings me to another point. We don't have a visible "basic templates" section on the forums or in the content DB. If anyone would like to share a template with other people, you can post the name of the template (Such as Sampire, Paladin Necromancer, Bard Cook or whatever) and post some of the basic skills to add on for effectiveness. Does not have to be too specific. I will create a few of my own and later make a section in the content DB for it.
