Unfortunately registrations are still closed for the shard due to hackers, advertisers, etc.

We have been busy working on the revamp and part of that is a plan to have better control over registrations. We are not yet sure what we will do, but for now we have a form with a captcha, and I have plans to code better account reporting tools for quick bulk management of bad accounts. (hackers, etc)

Also I can't stress enough how important it is to have good passwords, since there are people continuously trying to break into accounts on an ongoing basis. We will most likely enforce a Windows Domain style password policy. ex: at least 8 characters, 1 cap, 1 number, 1 special character, and a 30 day rotation (will probably be more like 90 days here).

Yuck. Forcing people to rotate is ftl. How will I ever remeber this crap when I dissappear for 3 months and come back and my password is reset. That'd suck.

Agreed, I think a strong password will suffice.

well enforcing a strong password. what kills me is the number of people who still use the commonly most used passwords, (love, sex, secrete, password, god, jesus, jova, miracle, test1234) to rattle off a few. If you use these passwords, for peets sake, change your password.

Yep exactly. You should of seen the uproar when they changed the password policy for Meditech where I work. Went from 3 chars to 8 and complex passwords.

Imagine, people using "abc" for an account that has access to all your medical data. Lot of people have zero sense when it comes to passwords.

I realize this and we have not forgot everyone. But Unfortunatly we do not have the time and resources to fight off all the hackers and other troublemakers.

Until the proper security systems are in place, and facilities enabling us to ban from outside the game are coded, we cannot open registrations or we will become under attack again, taking away from coding time, which I've started back up recently.

I'm debating on perfecting SQL then releasing it before the rest of the revamp so that I can potentially enable registration. The out of game ban system will use the SQL db so admins will have access to a web based interface which will be accessible even from workplaces.

After the redrum and the ice rocker incidents I've realized we are too wide open to troublemakers and need to put more work into the registration and logging systems to prevent these things in the future.

QFT

on the other hand I kind of understand the fear of hackers but the dieing of AoV is actually why I stopped playing the last few months (On top of a large work load). Without anyone around to kill theres little amusement to be found anymore.

Yeah the shard is dying but I agree with Red about this. I'd much rather have less players and have them be cool and mature than to have a bunch of prepubescent raging kids running around being pesks and generally fucking shit up.

Alternatively you could just hire a bunch of willing GM's who are active and fair but stern and just lay down the banstick to anybody who gets outta hand.

The foundation of the shard is being rebuilt and structured so that it's strong and capable of supporting a larger audience of players with minimal headaches to the staff and design team.

If we open up registration right now before our security and improvements are not yet ready, then we may get more players, but we end up like many of the other shards where hackers and bad players run rampant.

Our goal is to create a respectable shard where players are not constantly bombarded by harassment and bad players, where we can filter out the bad members of the community to ensure that the good players have the best Ultima experience.

For those who want an example of what could happen is if you look at shattered legacy. Don't get me wrong Ekin did a good job as far as the marketing side goes. I don't think I've EVER seen a shard have over 100 players online steady within the first months of being active.

However, the content is very cookie cutter and same as every other ml shard, and the back end is also very basic premade scripts. It's currently being run down by hackers and troublemakers. I want to avoid this from happening here but it takes time to develop and plan all of these systems.

I can guarantee at first it may be rough and hackers/troublemakers might still get through, but we will have a better foundation to act upon and deal with these, faster.

Yeah SL has plummeted to the ground in the last month, there used to be like 100+ players online now your lucky if there are 15 due to everybody just being sick of hackers and shitheads. I like the shard itself it was nice to play a fully implemented ML shard for a bit but there would be no way I would ever pvp on that shard. The amount of hackers, people using modded razor and playuo... 10 mini heals in a second? I mean come on now.

Yep lock this shard up bad ass hard. Keep them few who are true.
Nice to be able to run around dungeons and not be annoyed and actually be able to go to fel and not be ganked.

The forum account is separate from the UO account as they both use their own login system. At one point I may possibly setup a centralized login system but there's no actual plans for that. I could probably use something like ldap.

its still pointless to play on the shard... ever time I log in, I am the only one. Maybe if I keep my guy logged in, I will see 1 other person logged in occasionally. Its depressing.
