Uo + Razor on a flash drive...

Post by Infekktion »

im sorry if this is the wrong area 2 post this, but i need help asap...

so, im trying 2 run razor and uo off of my flash drive...i have it set as directory K: 4 future reference...i currently have uo and razor on my desktop and it runs perfectly...now, ive copied the entire razor folder and uo folder on2 my flash drive...no problem...then, i dbl-click razor like normal and it opens...heres where my problem lies...once i enter my char name and password, i get a screen that says:

There is some problem communicating with Origin. Please restart Ultima Online and try again.

If i dont recieve this msg, the program will just stick @ a grey screen 4ever...i think i need 2 switch something in the original razor loading screen...ie. under "client options" then the "load client" area??...possibly in the "data directory"...i dont know...any help would be greatly appreciated...id rather run uo and razor off of my flash drive 4 convenience and being able 2 play wherever i have access 2 a cpu...thanks very much in advance 2 any1 that can help...

I've heard of people doing it, but think you need admin rights as you have to submit some .reg files to the registry.

copy the updated uo dir and your razor dir to the thumb. Then first run the client patcher. then run razor, set razors connection settings, and tell razor where uo is. and walla.

Ive done this several times so Im quite sure it will work for you.

The data i/o for a thumb drive is quite slow and will result in a really sluggish game play. Just thought id warn you ahead of time.

thank you onykage...just a few specifics i need...

1. copy the updated uo dir and your razor dir to the thumb.
(are you referring 2 the files/folders on my desktop pc?)

2. Then first run the client patcher. then run razor
(im assuming the copies on my flash drive?)

3. set razors connection settings, and tell razor where uo is.
(assuming my flash drive is set as directory K:, in connection settings do i set it like K:EA Games/UO, then the actual client icon?)

thanks so much in advance 4 this help and any further...im sorry that my questions might be a bit rediculous, but i have little experience w/this exact situation...

you got the general idea, play with it for now. The fun part here is learn how to get better with computers and how they work. They really are fascinating creatures (computers). In the mean time your idea has triggered an idea that I need to research further and discuss with Red.

I will post more details later.

good luck

dang, u respond quickly...u must b sum kinda whiz-kid...

ok, so i was able 2 do this once...i actually got it 2 run...then i logged out 2 log my other char in and same ol' thing...goes back to the msg stating, "cant connect 2 origin."...thanks 4 the help, but is there something im completely overlooking??...btw, i do know computers decently, im not some kinda noob...lol...however, my problem is with running programs successfully off of a flash drive...

also, sometimes after putting in char name & password, it just gets stuck(not freezes) on loading screen while saying "trying 2 connect 2 uo!"

k those are registry issues. Your gonna get that from time to time. Thats also an issue of the flash drive as its always there but not always there. A flash drive is only "there" when the computer tries to read/write from it. Sometimes it will sleep and the computer doesnt wake it up, because the computer is acting like its a "hard drive" not a perif, so an i/o error happens behind the scene and it will sit there and wait for a response which doesnt happen, ie that never ending load screen.

if you have root privs on the alternate computer. You will need to goto regedit, and look at the entries for uo. And change all the entries that look for uo at "c:program filesea games...." to "k:uo" This how ever could pose a problem as well because there is no guarantee what letter the mobile device will be every time.

Also I only learned this recently but flash drives have limited writes, unlike floppies and other magnetic data, so you'll want to use the cheapest drive you can, and be sure to regularly backup stuff like uo macros.

Technically floppies have limited writes too....they fall apart under the pressure :P.

Everything has limited writes, even the magnetic platters in a HDD. Anyway, most HDDs have a MTBF of 300,000 hours or so.

yeah but i think the point here originally was that the write cap for a solid state device is about 2000 actions /sec versus a traditional hdd of something like 300k actions /sec

Yes, most flash drives/cards are very slow for not only writing, but reading as well. If you want fast solid state drives, you need SLC memory in them. Those will sustain over 100MB/sec for both reads and writes, and never have to be defragged. Unfortunately, 64GB versions still cost more than a decent desktop system. I'm also not aware of any flash drives or cards that have this type of memory in them.
