I heard a rumor when this comes out, they'll stop supporting the old clients (2D and 3D) and only support UKR one. I suggest everyone keep a backup of their client data files (patch data etc) so if this ever happens you can still play on this shard and other free shards. If they change the UO protocol, I don't know yet if I will support it, I think I will keep the shard on the old UO protocol/client. They will support all 3 clients for a while, so this tells me they won't change the protocol, but who knows, they may change it once they stop supporting the old clients. (2D and 3D)

Just thought I would mention this right now. I just hope this is not a step by EA to stop free shards altogether and making them illegal.

Yeah but eventually they'll stop. This is where it scares me, since at that point, they can change the protocol if they want, then release a UOKR update and boom. Old client won't magically stop working on free shards, but if they stop supporting it (updates/download) which they most likely would, then it will be hard to bring new people to the shard, or if we have to do a clean install, etc.

But they might also keep supporting it, this is just a rumor I heard, nothing more. But something to think about.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new client, I just hope it won't mean bad news for free shards. Though I think EA realizes that free shards might even help them so they might keep this in favor of both themselves and free shards and not mess with the protocol. At the rate RunUO is developed it would probably take them 5 years to recode it to handle the new protocol, as that is probably the most complex part of RunUO itself. You're dealing with raw packets and have to handle each one and interpret them etc.

The reason ultima online is still quite popular, is becouse of freeshards.
Most of the ideas EA uses are from free shards.
The ones who start playing uo on freeshard will most likely try the real thing too.

I could continue that list... anyways, i doubt they will make them illiegal, from what ive heard about the new client is that its here to do what 3d failed, to bring uo back to the current 'standarts'

I could be wrong tho, i just remembe reading this from somewhere.

Yeah think I read that too, and hopefully EA will realize that.
