Cops in Arms Race with Criminals

Funny. We heard the same thing back in 1996 with the big bank robbery in Hollywood. And I know the cops around where I live have been packing AR-15s for a while now, despite relatively low occurrence of guncrime.

Huh, I wouldn't have imagined this being a new thing. I always thought the police had some sort of semi/fully-automatic weapons in their closet.

I've never been for the "guns free for anyone to use" deal, but for sure, I do agree cops should have full access (with proper training of course) to all types of weapons, so if they run into the need - they have them.

I'm actually wondering how it works here in Canada for that, I would hope at least cops have access to guns that are illegal for general public. Always good to know the cops have an upper hand weapon wise. (unless they're after you

Well, the interesting thing to me from the article is that it mentions that there have been more issues with better weapons being available on the streets since the Assault Weapons Ban was lifted, but then they also say that the weapons (indicated as being fully automatic) are hitting the streets from ex-soviet bloc countries, which I'm not sure the AWB's being lifted would really affect....

I remember watching a show about that time a tank was roaming the streets of some US city, and during an interview one of the cops said they didn't have the equipment to deal with that kind of threat. I was thinking "oh you don't happen to have an AT-4 on hand or anti-tank spikes?" I was being sarcastic of course. . .I don't think police stations should be turned into mini-bunkers.

Yeah when they put any restrictions on arms, they should at least allow the cops to have special rights. At least I hope thats how it works here. I don't think a moose hunting riffle would be that affective if someone managed to sneak in some big guns from the US.
