Anyway... seriously, spyware generally wouldn't give someone remote control of your PC, or even automated control. That would be more the work of a trojan horse that most anti-spyware programs wouldn't detect and remove. That said, if you haven't had any issues lately, then perhaps you go whatever it was that spooked you in the first place.

Alot of people rave about Ad-Aware, not that my PC has ever had any problems to warrant using an anti-spyware program.

But if you're still having problems...

Nod 32 - best antivirus
boclean - great real time trojan protection
shields up - online site to test your firewall - watch out for port 113

windows firewall - useless but free
windows defender - free and moderate

outpost firewall - best firewall, but a hassle

password protect all accts used in windows - use good passwords
disable remote assistance, net and file shares if you aren't using them

Norton ghost - do a fresh install of your o.s. all your working applications, a/v firewall, etc - do not connect to the internet - when you have installed all your programs make an 'image' - when all your a/v's, firewalls, etc fail, restore the image, it is like having a new computer. - even if you are not infected you can restore, speeds the pc up like day one. Make sure you get all the updates after a restore.

-change your passwords often

--- all this is fairly easy to do, extra precausions - use firefox, disable java
if you bank online get a mobile rack and an extra hdd, do all your purchasing, and banking with this rack, and keep it turned off when not using.
if you don't have a mobile rack use a dedicated browser for purchases, banking, eg. use explorer for surfing, firefox to bank

This is the current set up for my systems.
