Advantage flea treatment for cats

Post by Chris Vogel »

Living in Tennessee, fleas are pretty much a year-round problem. I’ve tried Frontline, some cheap thing from Wal-Mart, and Advantage. Advantage is the only one that’s given me results (good results), which is why i’m devoting a topic to it.

Anyway, good or not, it’s rather expensive. The 6-month supply for cats over 4 kg costs US$44.95 at KV Vet Supply, the only supplier i really have experience with. That means i would spend US$14.98 per month for two cats.

But Bayer’s a bit sneaky. The formulas for the cat and dog versions are exactly the same with 9.1% imidacloprid (the active ingredient) and 90.9% “other ingredients”. (Well, they say 10% on their web site. Do ignore the weird change of decimal separators.) The 6-month supply for dogs over 25 kg is US$52.95. Each tube has 4.0 mL. Cats over 4 kg get 0.8 mL. (Cats under 4 kg get 0.4 mL.)

Yeah, so i have to measure it out myself, but that’s not a big deal. (I bought a needleless syringe for US$0.14 to make things easier.) Instead of paying US$14.98 per month, i spend US$3.53 per month. (That’s still for two cats!)

As always, check with your vet and do your homework before you use products against their directions. Don’t trust me! Dog products should normally never be used with cats.

there might be some bad side effects if you use it on squirrels. like growing ten feet and going on a rampage

It’s not like there’s anything better to do in Tennessee. :P
