I'm working on a friend of a friends computer. It's a 2yr old HP. It has 1,852 infected files on it.
It can't be saved. The XP restore does not work at any restore point and the HP restore which is on it's own partition does not work. THese dummies need to start sending restore CD's with new PC's and not rely on a restore partition.
It's getting a complete reformat. I've already found all the drivers off of the HP site. They'll just lose all of the pre-loaded software that came with the PC.
There was no ant-virus software, no firewall.....nothing.
nice.

1,852 infected files... that's... bad
Gotta love OEM computers, come with no software or tutorials for dumbasses that don't know jack about security or keeping their computers clean.

That's my average customer. Actually, if there's not too much browser hijacks and spyware, and that you can actually boot into windows normally, this would be a clean computer that just needs a bit of tuning up.

Can you not get online to just do a panda scan or something? Or housecall? Or is it just beyond saving that way?0 wrote: I'm working on a friend of a friends computer. It's a 2yr old HP. It has 1,852 infected files on it.

It was beyond saving. I loaded up WinXp SP2, AVG, Spywareblaster, AdAware and a few other pieces of software. Runs great now. I already gave it back to him. Now the hard part is for them to keep there anti-virus and spyware stuff updated. It seems to be a major chore for most people.ycontrol wrote:Can you not get online to just do a panda scan or something? Or housecall? It only cost him a case of beer this time because of our mutual friend. I saved him a few hundred bucks easy. Next time It's gonna cost him some $$.
