Jury recommends death for Peterson

REDWOOD CITY, California (CNN) -- A jury recommended Monday that Scott Peterson, the former fertilizer salesman whose case grabbed national headlines, be sentenced to death for killing his pregnant wife.

Cheers went up outside the courtroom as the jury announced its decision after 11 1/2 hours of deliberations over three days. The same jury that decided Peterson's sentence convicted him of first-degree murder November 12 in her death and of second-degree murder in the death of Conner.

Peterson clenched his jaw when the verdict was read and leaned over to speak with his attorney, Mark Geragos, but showed no other emotion, according to The Associated Press.

Laci Peterson's mother, Sharon Rocha, cried -- her lips quivering. Scott Peterson's mother, Jackie, showed no apparent emotion, according to the AP.

A crowd of several hundred gathered outside the courthouse to hear the verdict. The San Francisco Examiner came out with a special edition within minutes of the sentence, with the giant headline "DEATH."

Judge Alfred A. Delucchi will formally sentence Peterson on February 25. The judge has the option of reducing the sentence to life, but such a move in California is highly unlikely.

If Delucchi upholds the sentence, Peterson will be sent to death row at San Quentin State Prison outside San Francisco, the infamous lockup where prisoners gaze out small cell windows overlooking the same bay where Laci Peterson's body was discarded.

Hmm, I guess it's three wrongs that make a right, not two. ^_^

Kind of interesting, the other day I heard that more people have died of natural causes and of suicide on California's death row than have actually been put to death. How's that work? They must either be very backed up, or else they provide their inmates with a "jump-rope" for "exersizing."

After watching the OJ trial, I can't see how anyone in California could ever be convicted of murder.

Why are they still on this case anyway? I find they drag cases like this so much. Just do a decision and get it overwith is what I think.

The jury just delivered it's decision today, the official sentencing from the junge happens early next year I believe.

Being against the death penalty, I would have to say that this is not the decision I wanted. The media said that Scott probably would have been murdered if he were among the general prison population, but I don’t know how truthful that is.

I have mixed thoughts about the death penalty. some people simply deserve it... but at the same time, it's the easy way out as well.

What I don't get though is why it's so formal. The lethal injection for example has all these serious "safety" steps to it, such as steralizing. Why?! Just shove the needle in and get it over with.

But I think death should be reserved for military issues, such as if they caught bin laden, and I'm suprised they did not do anything with saddam yet. (though could have released him for all we know)

They're going to let the Iraqi people decide what to do with him, I believe

But sintekk, they could have released him for all we know.

Wouldn't that be hilarious! We go to all the trouble of "liberating" these poor people and get rid of their "evil" dictator (that we politically and financially supported for many years) just to have them release him back into the wild! LOL! Do you think he'll be running in January?

How is executing someone for a horrible crime a "wrong"?

I guess if you don't consider taking a human life a "wrong" then executing someone for a horrible crime wouldn't be a "wrong."

Some people believe that taking a human life, no matter what the reason, is still a "wrong."

Other people still, believe that our justice system is so unbelievably flawed, or at least very shaky, (especially in a case such as this where no "smoking gun" is produced nor any solid evidence tying the accused to the actual crime), that we can not and should not ever put so much faith in a verdict as to let the decision of our peers determine whether or not an individual can or can not continue to live.

But like I said, it all depends on the eyes through which we look. ;)

True, I mean, it's not like we spent billions to catch the man and put him on trial... we just spent billions to show the world that we could if we wanted to!

well they got the oil, so they're happy. American law can be weird, I mean letting iraq decide is pretty much letting him go, obviously they'll make sure all the iraq lawyers are from his regime. There will be a setup of some sort.

But anyway back to peterson. :D

Red, you obviously didn't see how happy the majority of the iraqi people were when we took over Iraq. Trust me, he's not going free

Red, why would the Iraqi people want to let Saddam go??? Who will make sure the "iraq lawyers are from his regime?" The Interim Government? Why? Who's behind this setup?

Yeah but what I'm saying is, if they're letting iraq decide, I'm sure the terrorists will be sure to stop the majority from winning against saddam. Just because they got saddam does not mean there's no terrorists. I assume it will be well planed so terrorists can't be part of the case... at least I hope.

Same here, I find so many cases drag on like this for nothing. It's rediculous. I mean peterson has so much time to do whatever he wants during this time and get away from it all, like a private jet out of the continent or something... heck he'd have time to build his own and go.

If someone's a murderer, then do the sentance right away, end of story, assuming it's common knowledge that he did the murder (ex: cameras, etc). If it's a hard situation then sure take the time to prove it, but once it's proven don't let it drag for nothing.

The terrorists are part of why the trial is being put off till later I think.

We'll just have to see how Iraq looks like next year.
