TORONTO, Ontario (AP) -- Canada's highest court said Thursday the government can redefine marriage to include same-sex couples, but it added that religious officials cannot be forced to perform unions against their beliefs.
The ruling by the court in Ottawa brings to the final stages a long, bitter fight over whether gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry in Canada.
Judges in six provinces and one territory have already overturned the traditional definition, allowing thousands of same-sex weddings.
Canada would join Belgium and the Netherlands in allowing gay marriage if the government acts to make it legal nationwide.
To pass in the House of Commons, the legislation needs the approval of about 44 of the 95 Liberal backbench members of Parliament to obtain a 155-vote majority.
One top Liberal predicted the legislation should pass easily after its introduction, likely early next year. It already has the support of the 38-member Liberal cabinet and virtually all the 54 Bloc Quebecois and 19 New Democrat MPs.
So Red, ya going to move to the south now? Mississippi or Georgia? North Dakota isn't too far away

China or Japan sounds like fun...
But it's been that way for a long time now anyway, they just made it "official" now. It probably won't affect here much since my city is small so if someone turns gay everyone knows, and the gossip gets around FAST.
Most churches probably don't allow gay marriages anyway so I'm sure it's still not really easy to do. Unless you want a low budget court "wedding".
Honestly, I just don't care anymore, if people want to turn gay left and right then go nuts but better not flirt with me, or come near for that matter.
I often criticise the US goverment for allot of things, but at least they have morals somewhat in better order then us. If we could combine the positive side of both goverments, it would make the ultamate country.

This just says basically the last of the appeals are done with. It's one brilliant thing about having a federal government with a different role than the localized governments (or state gov't in this case). You can make things legal in once place an not another within the same country, and be able to enforce those rules.

Actually in Japan you're likely to find a mix of shinto, buddhism, and christianity, and by mix I mean incorporating aspects of all three.sintekk wrote:I hope your kidding China is communist, and Japan is mainly Buddhist and Shinto.Red Squirrel wrote: China or Japan sounds like fun...

Actually is homosexuality legal there too? If yes this defeats the purpopse.
What about australia? Probably too hot there though.
No I'm staying here I would not move because of some new right I'll never use, I just find it sick that the right is there. It's not like they're legalizing guns, rocket launchers and other military equipment for home use or anything. In that case then it would affect me more... dry wall and bricks would have to be replaced with something more sophisticated, making the cost of living higher.

Funny we were just talking about this new law at a Bible study I just come back from. One thought that came which is rather interesting is that we as Christians tend to pray only for the small things that affect us, or people we know. But we should also be encouraged to pray for bigger things such as our country as a whole, the goverment and such, that the right decisions are made, and that the direction of the country is good etc. And I think this was simply a wake up call to make us realize it could be much worse, and we should pray and be concerned that it does not get worse.
For example, this new law forces churches to allow these so called "marriages" to happen. So the next step against morals could be much worse. Though I think it will slowly get worse as we aproach tribulation.

They don't force churches to do anything, I thought they allowed ministers to NOT do the marriage if they didn't want to?Red Squirrel wrote: For example, this new law forces churches to allow these so called "marriages" to happen.

Hmm I guess it depends, since someone mentioned that if a priest or pastor decides to say no, then they can be sued for discrimination or what not...
Though this whole thing really shows that our constitution has some flaws that need to be fixed, since it should restrict what they did, unlike how it is now where it allows it.
"Gay marriage is already legal in six of the 10 Canadian provinces and one of its three northern territories, but it remains illegal in the rest of the country." How reassuring Maybe I should of voted concervative.... no wait, they also wanted to go to iraq, and make guns legal, I'm sure we would have joined the US Nuke program too. So voting liberal was ok...
The perfect goverment would be one where everything they agree on, citizens agree on. That's when John Kerry comes in... LOL

Someone just mentioned it, like in person, when we were discussing this new bill. But it might of just been an assuption. Personally I don't think people would go far enough to sue, but if this was in the states, then probably they would.

And it would immediately be thrown out, because there is no legal basis. There might be a concern with not letting people rent out the facilities based on sexual orientation, I'm not up to date on the laws of such and how churches are viewed from a government standpoint, but a priest, bishop, etc will never be forced to choose between punishment or marrying homosexuals.
